Social support payment systems may be reviewed as DV commissioner warns they are being ‘weaponised’ against women

Australia’s domestic, family, and sexual violence commissioner, Micaela Cronin, raised concerns that social support systems, including child support, are being weaponised against women by current and former partners. The federal government is considering reviewing these systems to prevent such misuse. Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth confirmed that audits on the child support scheme are underway to improve compliance, accuracy, and enforcement. Reports highlight that some ex-partners manipulate payments, affecting single parents’ family tax benefits, leading to financial control and abuse. These reviews aim to prevent further harm and ensure proper support for separated parents and their children.
